Reduction Mammoplasty

Reduction Mammoplasty

The breasts being large means that you carry extra weight. Carrying excess weight in the chest area causes neck, back, and shoulder pain. It can affect a persons daily activities, work, and sex life negatively. Finding underclothes such as bras are hard to find, and the person cannot wear any dress they would like. Mainly during the summertime, heat rashes can form under the breasts along with superficial wounds. Removing the breast tissues during the reduction mammoplasty operation also reduces the chances of breast cancer. The surgery is performed in 3-4 hours and recovery time is 1 week. With this operation, it is possible to get rid of all these negativities. Sagging downward of the breasts is also connected with having oversized breasts. The nipple is carried to where is should be while the breast is being reduced. If the area between the nipple and where it should be is far from each other, the nipple is removed and replaced to the correct location (free nipple). If there isn’t much sagging, the nipple head without being removed can be transferred to its new place. The excess skin and breast tissue is removed based on the largeness of the breast depending on the expectation of the patient. The tissue that is removed from each breast can be between 1-2 kilograms. Depending on the patient’s excess tissue, removing 150-200 grams may also be enough. The operation technique is important on the patient’s age because of the chance of breastfeeding. Operations that prevent breastfeeding in young patients is not preferred. The scar left behind after the operation is where the colored breast area is, under the folding area of the breast in an upright form. Operation techniques are performed where the scar will be as short as possible under the folding area. The scar being significant is dependant on the patients healing structure and the technique the surgeon uses. Reduction mammoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. The operation time is approximately 4 hours. Drains and thick bandages are placed in the operation areas to support the breasts. Staying in the hospital is between 1-2 days. Drains are removed after 2-3 days depending on the liquids color and amount. The dressings are opened after 1 week and special uplift bras are worn. The patient will feel lightness in the chest after the operation depending on how much tissue has been removed.
